Landscape Architecture

World Class Design

CGLA has over 30 years of experience in creating exceptional Commercial Landscapes, including; mixed-use developments, civic plazas, parks, institutional and commercial landscapes, corporate headquarters and larger residential developments. We demonstrate through our designs that outstanding Landscape Architecture both adds value to people’s lives and is commercially rational for our clients.

Our Clients

We have a prestigious client list including multi award winning private developers, premium house builders, world renowned architects, as part of a multidisciplinary team. We understand the complexities of larger commercial projects and are strong advocates for the inclusion of the public landscape as a means to achieve environmental, economic and social sustainability.

Design Solutions

Grounded in the realities of site practicalities and planning constraints, we nevertheless bring creativity to the design solutions. Whether shaping the outdoors to promote an active and healthy lifestyle, extending nearby building architecture to create a cohesive unified theme, or designing a public space that serves as a focal point for a community, CGLA design spaces for people’s lives.

planning support / biodiversity net gain

CGLA are experts in providing support for planning applications including pre-application submissions and landscaping conditions. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a crucial element for new-build developments, set to become mandatory from April 2024. This new legislation prompts us to integrate BNG assessments and calculations into our landscape design process. We can now offer a comprehensive, seamless, service to our clients embarking on new-build projects. There is more information about this on our insights page here.

Commercial Projects

We design exceptional gardens, this includes; civic plazas, parks, institutional and commercial landscapes, corporate headquarters, master plans, and larger residential developments.

Our high-level conceptual approach blends both art and landscape design and strives to push the boundaries of what is typically perceived as landscape design and our creativity depends on challenging conventions that can limit the way we in which we look at spaces.

Design Process

Landscape Architecture involves a diverse range of design consideration.   The client’s brief and social, cultural, environmental and economic factors all interact to produce the context of a space.  We specialise in a collaborative approach and encourage open and transparent dialogue amongst different stakeholders.

Each design process begins with in-depth studies of the environmental, ecological, social, historical and cultural conditions to understand the broader context within the existing urban framework. This ensures that our designs are not just creative, but highly functional and sustainable for the long term.

FAQs

What does a Landscape Architecture package cost?2024-07-10T09:21:46+01:00

Given the range of projects, providing a cost in the absence of details of the project is unhelpful. Typically a commercial project requires more detail, more drawing iterations and more liaison with a broader design and project team so costs tend to be higher than for a domestic garden design project. We are open to discussing how the costing works and providing stripped-back designs for price-sensitive planning-related work, as well as offering focussed and dedicated resources to larger and more prestigious projects.

Can CGLA offer BNG (Biodiversity Net Gain) plans?2024-07-10T09:21:22+01:00

Yes! CGLA have considerable expertise in this area. Whilst the legislation is new and there is much uncertainty about implementation and enforcement in practice, we are able to offer a CPD to architects interested in finding out more, and can deliver BNG plans for our clients as an integrated part of our Landscape Design package.

What is the Landscape Architecture process?2024-07-10T09:20:57+01:00

We are invited to tender for work in a wide range of ways and always aim to respond rapidly and in a tailored manner. Most commonly, after receiving a tender pack or baseline information, a preliminary discussion will allow us to refine the brief and present a proposal for consideration. We pride ourselves on being flexible and open to adjusting the stages or outputs to suit planning or other requirements. Once appointed, we work through the standard stages from preliminary concept designs through to completed concepts and schematic and tender stages if required.

Can CGLA design commercial projects?2024-07-10T09:20:38+01:00

CGLA have 2 qualified Landscape Architects within our team, with more than 40 years of experience between them, including extensive experience of leading projects in China, the Middle East and Europe. In the UK the team have been successful in designing commercial and public realm spaces for private companies, major developers and schools. With expertise in BNG (Biodiversity Net Gain) the CGLA team can deliver assessments and plans for this.

What is Landscape Architecture?2024-07-10T09:20:02+01:00

Our Landscape Architecture practice is here to provide commercial and public realm design. Whilst there is significant skills overlap with domestic garden design, the approach is typically more commercial, the qualifications required to do the work are more formal (typically degree level) and the considerations on optimising designs tend to be broader. Final design packages are typically standardised to echo the RIBA design stages, and the work is often geared around planning requirements.
