Step 4 -Garden Features and Materials
Adding Magic to Your Space

From paving to pergolas, water features to wow-factor – this is where your garden gets its soul.
With your garden plan, style and planting palette taking shape, it’s time to turn your attention to the tangible: the materials underfoot, the features that draw the eye, and the magical touches that make a space unforgettable.
This is the part where detail and delight come together.
Step 1: Materials Matter
The materials you choose will set the tone and impact everything from durability to maintenance. Keep it simple, cohesive, and purpose-driven.
- Stick to one material of each size (i.e. one sett, one paving slab, one gravel) for a sense of order and co-ordination
- Consider laying patterns- herringbone vs basketweave, coursed versus random rectangular
- For larger areas, adding an insert of a different material or pattern can work well in defining dining space for example

- Think about texture: sawn stone vs. riven, smooth vs. tumbled
Consistency in materials – even with variation in format – brings visual calm. For example, a sawn sandstone patio paired with matching sett edgings can create a clean, contemporary look. Contrasting materials and more texture tends to look more traditional.
Step 2: Feature with Purpose

Garden features can make a space sing, but restraint is key. Don’t overload – let one or two things shine.
- A bespoke water feature, a sculptural bench, or a striking gate can act as focal points
- Fire pits, pergolas, or built-in seating areas are practical and eye-catching
- Consider views from the house – what will draw you out?
Water features are especially popular – they provide movement, sound, reflection, and wildlife interest. But they do need planning, especially when integrated into the wider layout.
Step 3: Create Moments of Magic

The most memorable gardens have a touch of surprise or personality.
- A mirror panel to bounce light around a shady corner
- An artwork, sculpture or framed view
- A ‘starlight’ bench, or a gallery wall on a hedge (yes, we’ve done that!)
These are the details that stop guests in their tracks and make the space feel truly your own.
Step 4: Don’t Forget Lighting

Lighting can completely transform a garden – adding depth, drama and function after dark.
- Uplight trees or structures for theatre
- Use low-level path lights for safety and softness
- Accent key features (water, sculpture, walls) for subtle effect
Avoid overdoing it – less is more. Think elegant restaurant terrace, not Blackpool illuminations.
Step 5: Visit a Stone Yard
Seeing materials in person helps massively. London Stone and other quality suppliers will have showrooms where you can see full-scale samples and get a feel for finish and tone. Bring a photo of your space – they can often advise.
