Our client had recently completed a major renovation of this gorgeous large city home, and needed a garden to match. The plot features a substantial house and new pool building, and whilst the generous rear garden was largely screened from neighbouring houses by existing mature trees, there was little to excite a young family.
The brief was to create a fun yet elegant space, with lush trees and planting, and new focal points and destinations within the garden to encourage all of the family out into the space. Our design created corners to explore and run through for the children, as well as plenty of seating areas to make the most the sun.
The large terrace outside the pool house is home to a beautiful bespoke Corten outdoor kitchen unit (perfect for the pizza oven), as well as a large dining area and space for sun loungers, all softly divided by swathes of ornamental grasses.
The large open lawn dotted with mounds of Taxus (Yew) is fantastic run-around space, and a trampoline and play frame are tucked behind lush planting, creating an exciting hidden pocket for the children to explore.
A highlight of this garden is the carefully selected mix of specimen trees. These were chosen to add seasonal colour, texture and interest, building on the mature feel and privacy of the existing plot. A blend of deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs and perennials ensure form and structure throughout the year whilst gently enclosing the separately defined areas.
Paved paths lead past a vegetable growing area, and back towards the front garden and driveway. Here, planted borders dress the house and create an attractive approach, whilst maximising the drive area to allow for plenty of parking space.
Overall this transformation has been a stunning shift to a wonderful home. Utilising the natural assets of the site in terms of good space, architecture, and mature tree cover, to provide multiple zones, views and rest/play space within an overall harmonious scheme.
