This elegant and substantial house was having a major overhaul, including some minor extensions and changes to internal walls and windows. The substantial gardens wrap around 3 sides of the house, and whilst the planting was mature and broadly attractive (with some gorgeous features and trees), the whole effect lacked depth and colour. It had become somewhat monochrome and formless and really needed a refresh.
Our brief was to create a much more colourful and attractive setting for the updated home, without losing the charm and appeal of the existing mature garden. In particular, we were asked to create a more appropriate approach to the house, including a new large herringbone brick paved area, new planting, and refurbishing an existing large pond. This was designed to better complement the lovely frontage to the house and lead visitors more directly to the front door, as well as providing a more attractive outlook from within the house. To the rear, a new small courtyard area was added, featuring outdoor seating and a firebowl , whilst working around some existing paths and planting. A new bespoke play area was included too. The overall approach was to keep things feeling a bit quirky and old where this seemed to work, rather than just starting again.
A large part of our work was to redevelop all of the planting areas, retaining good trees, shrubs and perennials, highlighting a few major specimens, and replacing or improving areas that had become drab or overgrown. We reshaped some of the planting areas too, creating a better shape on the lawn and enclosing a path between planting in places. The result is a picture of natural beauty, changing with the seasons and providing colour year round. It feels like the entire plot has had a face lift, without losing its personality and charm!
