Garden Redesign with Seasonal Planting & Courtyard Seating
PRIVATE RESIDENCE
Location: Amersham, Buckinghamshire
Client: Private Client
Status: Design and Landscaping Completed, ongoing Maintenance underway
This elegant home in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, was undergoing a major refurbishment, including minor extensions and updates to the interior layout. The surrounding gardens, though mature and full of character, had become monochrome and lacked depth and vibrancy. While there were beautiful trees and structural elements in place, the overall space needed a refresh to reintroduce colour, form, and a stronger connection to the house.
The redesign focused on enhancing the existing garden while preserving its charm. The approach to the house was reimagined with a new herringbone brick-paved entrance, framed by fresh planting and a refurbished pond. This created a more welcoming first impression while improving the views from inside the home.
Refining the Front Entrance & Approach
One of the key updates was the transformation of the arrival space. The new brick-paved entrance was designed to better complement the architecture of the house while guiding visitors more naturally towards the front door. The existing pond was carefully restored, becoming a striking feature that adds movement and visual interest to the front garden. Thoughtfully chosen planting softens the approach, creating a seamless connection between the home and its surroundings.
Courtyard Seating & Play Area for Family Living
To the rear, a new courtyard space was introduced, providing a more defined outdoor seating area. Featuring a firebowl, this intimate space works in harmony with existing paths and planting, creating a cosy spot for relaxation and social gatherings. A bespoke play area was also incorporated, ensuring that the garden remains functional and inviting for all members of the household.
Rather than stripping everything back, the design carefully balanced new elements with the garden’s existing features, maintaining its sense of character and maturity.
Planting for Year-Round Interest & Structure
A large part of the project focused on reworking the planting scheme. Existing trees, shrubs, and perennials were selectively retained, while key specimens were highlighted to enhance their impact. Areas that had become overgrown or lacking in seasonal interest were reshaped, improving the flow of the garden while introducing a more dynamic and colourful planting palette.
Subtle changes to the lawn and pathways helped to enclose certain areas, creating a sense of movement and natural division between different zones of the garden. The result is a landscape that evolves beautifully with the seasons, ensuring colour, texture, and structure throughout the year.
A Fresh, Vibrant Garden with Timeless Charm
This project successfully revitalised a mature garden, introducing fresh planting, structural refinements, and thoughtful new features while maintaining its original character. The blend of existing and new elements ensures that the space feels both refreshed and timeless, offering a garden that complements the home without losing its history and charm.
