Location: Downley, High Wycombe
Client: Private Client
The property sits within a large “L” shaped plot that slopes significantly from east to west down where it meets the adjacent Chiltern Wood along the western boundary. A contemporary cedar clad / glass extension has been added to the rear offering open views from the house across the plot. The high elevation of the house provided stunning views into the tree canopies of the adjacent mature woodland.
The client`s vision was to create a series of functional spaces that were seamlessly linked through the site such as informal seating areas, lawns and sunken firepit and an existing Koi Pond which was to be retained and incorporated. Particular focus was to be given to solving the fundamental challenge of how to navigate and move through the site given the severity of the slope without the need for major earthworks and structural interventions.
The Design Approach: Purity of Form
Inspired by architect Marcel Breuer and the art works of Kandinski, our design approach was intentionally very strict and disciplined. Focusing on the sculptural qualities of purity of form, the design language that was extrapolated was very minimalistic yet bold and unique.
Pure circular forms are scattered across the slope of the site by way of floating cedar decks and platforms, providing an accessible link through the site. Three large overlapping, tilted lawn discs are draped over the existing high point of the slope creating a highly sculptural lawn. The circular firepit is built into the slope creating an intimate and private seating area with views into the woodland. Highly polished steel spheres add further sculptural three dimensionality and reflection. The slope remains largely unchanged apart from minor grading and sculpting.
