A Grand Redevelopment for a Private Estate

This 70-acre private estate in Buckinghamshire underwent a significant transformation, guided by a vision to restore its grandeur while creating a welcoming and usable space for an extended family. Previously used as commercial premises, the property required a sensitive and staged landscaping approach to reintroduce beauty, structure, and function. The estate’s owners, visiting only occasionally throughout the year, needed a garden that not only respected the scale and historic feel of the site but also provided areas for gathering, play, and quiet enjoyment.

Restoring the Grand Terrace & Reimagining the Grounds

The Grand Terrace adjacent to the main house was entirely redesigned, with formal pathways, traditional water features, and thoughtfully placed planting areas that invite pause and appreciation of the estate’s far-reaching views. Over the following five years, a phased programme of works was delivered across the grounds. These included the creation of a new play area for visiting children, expansive perennial and shrub borders, a network of new steps and paths, and the enhancement of two existing lakes and their surrounding watercourses. Marginal planting, fountains, and new bridges brought life and structure to these large features, making them focal points within the wider landscape.

A Spa Garden and Long-Term Care

The final stage of the project introduced a contemporary spa garden, designed to complement a proposed new development within a repurposed stable block. This modern, private retreat provided a contrasting but complementary addition to the wider traditional landscape. CG was responsible not only for the design and implementation but also for maintaining the estate throughout the five-year period. Our team provided seasonal planting in line with the family’s visits and worked closely with the live-in gardening team during the final stages to enable a smooth handover, ensuring the garden continues to thrive with light-touch support as needed.
