Lime Tree House – A Contemporary Garden for a Landmark New Build

Private Residence

Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire

Private Client

Status: Completed

Service Offer: Designed by CGLA | Soft Landscaping Delivered to Completion

Designed by Danks Badnell, this striking new-build home called for a garden to match its architectural quality. With a long-standing relationship with the clients, CGLA was delighted to shape the outdoor spaces and deliver the soft landscaping through to completion.

Landscape Design Brief

The vision was to create a landscape that complemented the precision and craft of the house, while offering both formality and relaxation. The garden needed to provide a dramatic sense of arrival, flowing recreational areas, and elegant entertaining terraces — all within a setting that felt mature and established from the outset.

A Grand Approach and Courtyard Design

To the front, a sweeping resin-bound gravel drive edged in granite setts leads to a central island with a sculptural water feature by Tristan Cockerill. The approach is elevated further by a line of mature espalier lime trees, bridging the scale of the house with the majestic chestnuts on the boundary and creating a sense of grandeur on arrival.

Discreet acoustic fencing, screened by mature hedging, ensures the front courtyard remains private and tranquil.

Rear Gardens with Entertaining and Recreation

At the rear, a sequence of outdoor rooms unfolds. A broad lawn, framed by paved paths, draws the eye towards a productive vegetable garden and a hidden tennis court with pavilion, carefully screened behind clipped yew hedging.

Closest to the house, generous terraces connect seamlessly with the indoor–outdoor pool house, and a sunken swimming pool preserves open views across the garden. A boules pitch and an avenue of box-headed maples further enrich the space, blending formality with Mediterranean character.

Planting for Structure and Softness

Mature and semi-mature trees provide instant impact and anchor the architecture into the landscape. A cool, soft planting palette of shrubs and perennials weaves through the design, adding structure, texture and seasonal variation. Though recently completed, the garden already feels harmonious and established — a framework that will only grow more elegant over time.
