This large garden behind an attractive large house in Buckinghamshire presented a common challenge for home owners with a plot sloping sharply away from the house, and a desire for as large a level lawn as possible. A woodland area at the rear of the garden restricted the amount of levelling that could be done, but also provided a gorgeous backdrop to the formal lawns and a destination for a woodland walk and play areas.
The client brief was to create as small a drop-off as possible from the existing terrace, as large a levelled area as possible, and no steep drops at the rear of the lawn. All this in the context of a gorgeous plant-lovers garden, including a hot tub and greenhouse area. This is a common brief that really benefits from 3D design. Working closely with the client, our design team created a series of options, demonstrating the maximum lawn space, and the optimum trade-offs to allow for hiding of walls and minimising drop-offs. We thus removed the need for balustrading and steep flights of steps, and managed the costs of cut and fill as much as possible, with cunning use of terracing and planting to hide the level changes as much as possible.
The final result is a gorgeous open lawn area bounded by rich planting that leads into the partially enclosed hot tub and seating space. The patio feels pleasantly elevated but does not have a massive drop-off and the overall feel is perfectly in keeping with the woodland setting.
