This garden was a typical “developer plot” where a substantial and well finished house had been put into a good sized level site, but pretty much nothing had been done to the garden. A large rectangle of lawn with a few plants around the edges provided a somewhat depressing outlook, and did nothing to divert the eye from the houses beyond the back fence. The patio was of poor quality, although the size was adequate, and there was nowhere to sit to capture the sun where it hit in the middle of the day half way up the garden.
The design was created to enhance the scale of the plot, using geometric shapes and a striking “Frame” feature on an attractive long axis from the main kitchen double doors to the rear of the house. This allowed the planting of a stand of silver birch behind which completely screen the houses beyond, underplanted with grasses and allium bulbs. The patio was replaced with a contemporary granite paving, and this was extended out into the secondary seating area and as a frame around the long lawn. A stunning “Water Table” provides a fabulous focal point from some of the main rear windows, and the gentle sound of water can be heard around the garden.
The secondary seating area benefitting from a metal louvered pergola was created, surrounded by luscious and colourful planting. Irrigation was installed to ensure the extensive planting settled in well, and in its first couple of years the garden has gone from strength to strength under the care of the Cool Gardens Maintenance Team.
Gentle lighting around the gardens mean this is a glamorous picture by day and night, making the most of the fact that the rear of the house is not overlooked and therefore curtains are rarely drawn. Our clients were bold in going for this design when something perhaps more “vanilla” could have been proposed, but there is nothing in the garden without purpose, and the large Frame works very well in the space, softened by the surrounding mass of planting and balancing the scale of the house, gardens and pergola perfectly.

“CGLA designed a new garden for us, undertook all the planting and helped co-ordinate/project manage the delivery of hard landscaping and electrical work by others. They also helped source those separate contractors. That worked out cheaper for us than delivering everything through CGLA. It did however create some inevitable interface issues which the CGLA team worked hard to address. The design was and is fabulous and the end result looks amazing. The design process was helped enormously by the production of 3D images and fly-throughs that helped the whole family understand the proposed design and what it would look like. The team listened to client feedback along the way and responded to it positively. We are now using the Cool Gardens maintenance team to look after the garden. And keep it looking amazing. They are a very nice team of people. They combine design flair with care about what they do and work to very high standards of professionalism and customer care”.
