Perched above the coastline of St Brelade, Jersey, this multi-level sloped garden was designed to complement a major home renovation and pool installation, transforming a tired landscape into a contemporary outdoor retreat.
With panoramic sea views, the homeowners wanted a sympathetic yet striking landscape design that embraced the natural surroundings while introducing clean lines, structured planting, and sculptural focal points. The CGLA team developed a detailed 3D model to refine the complex geometry, ensuring every level of the garden felt seamless, balanced, and inviting.
A Structured Landscape with Flowing Geometry
The central lawn acts as the heart of the design, framed by blocks of clipped hedging that provide definition while breaking up the large planting spaces. To navigate the garden’s multiple levels, sloped planting beds were introduced, minimising the need for excessive retaining walls while softening transitions between spaces.
Leading towards the infinity pool, an avenue of large clipped hornbeam cubes creates a dramatic visual axis, guiding movement while enhancing the sense of scale. A sculpture at the end of the pathway serves as a striking focal point, reinforcing the garden’s contemporary aesthetic. Specimen trees were thoughtfully placed throughout the space, adding vertical interest and balance to what was previously a stark, open landscape.
A Distinctive Hot Tub Terrace & Organic Hardscaping
Adjacent to the annexe, a hot tub with a sliding cover was installed, offering a private retreat within the garden. To contrast the geometric formality of the main landscape, the hardscaping in this zone features organic shapes, breaking up the expanse of paved areas while adding a softer, more playful character.
Low hedging and tropical-inspired planting were incorporated to enhance this relaxed, intimate setting, offering a different experience within the garden while still feeling cohesive with the overall design.
A Mediterranean-Inspired Planting Palette
Unlike many UK projects, this Jersey garden allowed for a more exotic, sun-loving plant selection, blending subtropical species with structural evergreens. The design also includes a citrus orchard, reinforcing the garden’s Mediterranean influences while adding a productive, sensory element.
The use of local granite walls, supplied by Granite Le Pelley, grounds the design in its setting, seamlessly tying the garden to the island’s natural landscape.
Minimalist Front Courtyard & Striking Lighting
The front entrance and parking areas were kept neat and understated, with locally sourced materials, minimal planting, and carefully positioned lighting ensuring a clean, architectural finish. By using subtle illumination, the design enhances key features without overpowering the natural beauty of the space.
A ‘Wow’ Garden with a Relaxed Family Feel
This coastal garden transformation blends structured formality with relaxed elegance, making the most of its dramatic setting while creating a welcoming, livable space. The CGLA team worked closely with the homeowners to ensure the landscape reflected their vision, sourcing much of the planting and collaborating with local experts, including Granite Le Pelley.
