This contemporary new build in Hazlemere, High Wycombe, is set within a heavily wooded, sloping site, offering a unique opportunity to integrate architecture and landscape. The design was developed to retain and enhance the natural woodland character while promoting a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle.
The key challenge was to create a generous entertainment terrace directly adjacent to the house and establish a natural connection between this elevated space and the wider landscape. The design also incorporates an existing shipping container, set to be transformed into a home office or studio, along with secluded seating areas, a firepit, and a utility building—all while preserving the natural contours of the land and protecting tree root zones.
Balancing Minimalist Design & Natural Forms
Inspired by Bauhaus principles, the design embraces the idea that form follows function, creating a structured yet organic garden. The clean lines of contemporary hard landscaping contrast with the fluidity of the surrounding woodland, establishing a dynamic relationship between built and natural elements.
Dense planting is balanced with open, contemporary clearings, offering a series of carefully curated spaces for relaxation and entertainment. The pathways weave through the landscape, allowing for exploration while maintaining a sense of order and clarity amid the natural surroundings.
Seamless Integration with the Landscape
Rather than reshaping the site, the design respects the existing slope, introducing subtle transitions between different levels without major alterations. The entertainment terrace is positioned to maximise views, while pathways and seating areas are carefully placed to enhance privacy and immersion within the woodland setting.
A Functional & Immersive Outdoor Experience
This garden creates a sense of movement and exploration, blending structured outdoor spaces with the surrounding natural environment. The result is a contemporary yet grounded landscape that offers both function and tranquillity, supporting a lifestyle that embraces both architecture and nature.
