Estate Garden Inspired by Natural Waterforms

Private Estate

Location: Mortimer, Reading

Client: Private Client

Status: Ongoing

Located in the rural landscape of Mortimer, Reading, this private estate sits within the Thames Basin Heaths, an area defined by lowland heathland, woodlands, and historic hunting grounds. The garden design draws inspiration from the natural and historical features of the site, embracing the surrounding biodiversity while integrating a structured, contemporary aesthetic.

The design concept mirrors the natural formation of ephemeral ponds, seasonal pools that shape the landscape through water’s natural processes of erosion and evaporation. By abstracting these organic forms, the garden seamlessly blends into the rural setting while offering a striking contrast to the formal architecture of the house.

Organic Forms & Natural Flow

The garden’s layout follows the sculptural patterns created by water movement, ensuring that pathways, planting areas, and structural elements feel fluid and in harmony with the land. This approach allows for a seamless integration of functional spaces while maintaining a natural aesthetic.

Carefully selected planting complements the site’s free-draining, acidic soil, with species such as oak, heather, gorse, and bracken enhancing the connection to the surrounding heathland. The composition balances soft, organic shapes with defined architectural elements, reinforcing the contrast between landscape and built form.

A Landscape Rooted in History & Ecology

By reflecting the unique environmental characteristics of the site, this garden creates a timeless, immersive experience. The design respects the natural processes that have shaped the land over centuries while offering a refined and structured approach to modern estate landscaping.
