The site comprises of 3.5 hectares of horticultural use and is located to the west of Clamp Hill and to the east of Brookshill. The site is predominantly open and is currently occupied by the Jacques Amand Garden Centre and accommodates ancillary offices on two floors, café and facilities, and other ancillary uses to the horticultural use of the site.

The whole of the site is within the Green Belt and the Harrow Weald Ridge Area of Special Character; the undeveloped parts of the site form part of a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) rated as of borough importance (grade II) An area tree preservation order protects trees across this and the adjoining sites.

It is proposed to demolish the existing garden centre and associated buildings and structures and to build a care home consisting of 101 bedrooms., to accommodate dementia sufferers.

The Design Approach: The New Direction

The concept of a linear design language is inspired by the sites historical context as a horticultural nursery over the past 70 years. Regimented lines of trees and plants is always synonymous with a typical nursery layout and these strong architectural lines have long been a popular feature of the traditional British landscapes to create vistas, avenues and frames.

Despite shifts in the landscape and changes in the land use, the site remains a unique mature, natural woodland which provides an interesting opportunity to juxtapose a rigid linear and sculpturally organic approach.

The strong repetitive movement of the linear language serves to anchor the modular architecture with the landscape as well as defining spaces and courtyards between buildings whislt punctuating into the more informal wider landscape.
