Urban Roof Terrace & Courtyard Landscaping
Brixton Department Store, Squire and Partners Architects
The Brixton Department Store, a landmark building in South London, was given a bold new identity as the flagship headquarters for Squire and Partners Architects. Following an outstanding concept design by Marcus Barnett, CGLA were brought in to develop the design detailing and deliver the landscaping for both the roof terraces and central courtyard.
One of the project’s most impressive features was the installation of a 10-metre tree in the courtyard — a feat of precision engineering completed with the use of a crane. This striking centrepiece brings scale, structure, and greenery to the heart of the building.
Productive Roof Terrace Design
On the 4th floor, a spacious roof terrace adjacent to the in-house restaurant was transformed into a vibrant public space. The planting includes fruit trees, herbs, and other edible species, creating a green, productive environment that supports wellbeing, sustainability, and social interaction.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful landscaping can breathe life into urban architecture, turning underused roof spaces into living, usable gardens that complement the building’s creative purpose.
