Garden Transformation with Screening & Studios
PRIVATE RESIDENCE
Location: Bovingdon Green, Buckinghamshire
Client: Private Client
Status: Design and planting completed, ongoing maintenance underway
This beautifully renovated home in Bovingdon Green, Buckinghamshire, required a complete rethink of its outdoor space. With all the garden areas positioned at the front and side of the house, the existing layout had been dominated by a large car park and driveway, leaving little room for greenery or relaxation. The homeowners wanted to create a peaceful, enclosed garden, separating parking from pedestrian areas while introducing privacy, structure, and seasonal planting.
The CGLA design team developed a carefully structured landscape that transformed the space into a private oasis of calm, colour, and scent. Through a combination of mature hedging, specimen trees, screening solutions, and elegant garden studios, this project has created a secluded, functional, and beautifully planted retreat.
Redefining Space with Screening & Secure Boundaries
A key element of the design was the separation of the driveway and car parking area from the main garden, ensuring the outdoor space felt like a true extension of the home rather than just a practical entrance. This was achieved by installing a bespoke wall and beautifully crafted gates, designed to complement the house’s architecture while offering privacy and security.
Tall structural planting was introduced to create a natural screen, particularly to block views of a nearby development. Super-mature hedging and specimen trees were used in key areas to establish immediate privacy and a sense of enclosure, ensuring the garden felt settled and inviting from the outset.
Dog-proofing was also an important consideration, and the layout allowed for a secure yet stylish boundary that integrated seamlessly with the overall design.
Garden Studios & Tranquil Seating Spaces
To accommodate home working and hobbies, two garden studios were introduced, positioned to blend effortlessly with the landscape. These were framed with soft, layered planting, ensuring they felt like an integral part of the garden rather than separate structures. A secondary seating area was designed between the two studios, providing a quiet, private retreat surrounded by greenery.
A Seasonal & Sensory Garden with Ever-Changing Interest
To soften the hard landscaping and create a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere, a carefully curated planting scheme was introduced. Designed for year-round beauty, the garden now offers a constantly evolving display of colour, texture, and scent.
The planting includes a mix of:
- Mature hedging and specimen trees to provide structure and privacy
- Layered perennials and shrubs to introduce softness and seasonal variety
- Bulbs and additional planting that continue to be added by the CGLA maintenance team, ensuring the garden remains fresh and dynamic
A Grand Home Transformed into a Private Sanctuary
What was once a large, exposed driveway has been transformed into a secluded, beautifully landscaped retreat, offering both privacy and year-round beauty. The addition of elegant screening, structured planting, and thoughtfully positioned seating areas has created a space that feels welcoming, calming, and deeply connected to the home.
By carefully balancing functionality with aesthetics, this project highlights how even challenging layouts can be redesigned to offer both practicality and tranquillity.
