Barons Court

Residential Development

Location: Bishops Avenue, London

Client: Private Developer

Architect: Wolff Architects

Size: 10,000 sqm

Status: In Planning

This prominent site is positioned at the southern end of The Bishop’s Avenue in the London Borough of Barnet. The area is characterised by large detached twentieth century houses typically of two to four storeys, set within generous private grounds. The area is part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb Conservation Area and the site is approximately 2.5 Acres in size.

The proposed architectural scheme seeks to redevelop a currently unoccupied site with the provision for 109 high-end, contemporary residential apartments due to a requirement for an increase in residential accommodation within this prestigious area of North London.

The Design Approach: Ellipses In Nature

Great emphasis has been made on providing an environment that promotes social interaction with a balance of both private and communal space that are in harmony with the surrounding natural context.

Inspired by the pure elliptical form that can be found in nature, stones skipping, rain drops falling or just simply a composition of random pebbles by the edge of the river. Abstracting and extrapolating these unique and sculptural patterns created an organic but controlled design language which aimed to emphasize the sites natural context and contrast with the more formal Arts and Crafts style of the architecture.

Large elliptical planting forms that appear as if they have been scattered like pebbles across the site inform the shapes of the sinuous retaining walls, terraces, open lawns and private gardens. A holistic and sculptural composition whilst creating a safe and secure external environment for residents to enjoy.
