This Beaconsfield garden design was created to overcome the challenges of a steeply sloping site, transforming it into a stunning, family-friendly garden with a large level lawn, structured planting, and inviting outdoor living spaces.
Set within the picturesque Buckinghamshire countryside, this garden originally suffered from awkward slopes and limited usability. The homeowners wanted a design that would maximise space, create functional zones, and enhance the natural beauty of the setting. Our solution involved carefully engineered level changes, elegant retaining walls, and a sweeping lawn, ensuring the garden was both practical and visually striking.
Creating a Large, Level Lawn on a Sloped Site
One of the biggest challenges of this project was the significant gradient of the site. To create a more usable space, the garden was carefully restructured with tiered levels, allowing for a generous, flat lawn perfect for family activities, entertaining, and relaxation.
Retaining walls were introduced to stabilise the slopes and create distinct terraces, while subtle grading ensured a seamless transition between different areas of the garden. These level changes not only enhanced accessibility but also provided an opportunity to introduce elegant steps and pathways, leading visitors naturally through the space.
The result is a spacious, beautifully integrated lawn that feels expansive yet connected, framed by lush planting and soft landscaping that blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment.
Defined Seating Areas for Relaxation & Entertaining
To complement the large lawn, we designed several seating areas throughout the garden, each positioned to make the most of sunlight, shade, and views.
A large, porcelain-paved terrace near the house provides an ideal space for outdoor dining and social gatherings, while a secondary seating area further down the garden offers a more secluded retreat, perfect for relaxing in a quieter setting.
The clever integration of different zones for relaxation and entertaining ensures that the garden is versatile and enjoyable in all seasons, while carefully placed pathways and steps encourage movement and exploration.
Structural Planting for Year-Round Interest
To enhance the tiered design, the planting scheme was carefully curated to provide texture, structure, and seasonal colour.
- Evergreen shrubs and yew hedging create a strong architectural framework, providing privacy and definition.
- Ornamental grasses and perennials soften the edges, introducing movement and contrast against the structured elements.
- Mature trees were strategically placed to frame views, add shade, and reinforce the sense of depth within the space.
This combination ensures that the garden remains visually engaging throughout the year, with a natural flow that complements the surrounding landscape.
Seamless Transitions & Practical Design Features
A network of paved pathways and well-placed steps links the different levels, making the garden feel cohesive and accessible. The use of natural stone and contemporary porcelain paving ensures a seamless connection between materials, creating a balance between modern elegance and timeless appeal.
With the garden now fully restructured and optimised for usability, the homeowners can enjoy a beautifully proportioned outdoor space that blends functionality with aesthetics.

“CGLA have been excellent in every respect, from their comprehensive design process with electronic and paper designs, to the professionalism and respectfulness of all their staff members I’ve dealt with. Our garden looks wonderful, the extensive hard landscaping has transformed our outdoor space and all the plants supplied have flourished. In less than six months, the garden looks mature. They are also very quick to deal with any issues which arise, even after finishing the job. Highly recommended.”
