A Day in the Life of a High-End Landscape Project Manager

CEO & Garden Designer
Ruth Marshall

If a garden designer creates the vision, the landscape project manager is the one who makes it happen—turning concept into reality with precision, skill, and unshakable control over the moving parts. It’s a role that blends deep technical knowledge with people skills, commercial acumen, and the ability to stay calm when things don’t go to plan. In other words, it’s never boring.
The Role at Its Core
A great project manager has been there, done it, and (probably) got muddy boots to prove it. They understand how to build a garden from the ground up—setting out, groundworks, retaining walls, paving, decking, lawns, planting, brickwork, drainage, and everything in between.
That experience gives them instant credibility with contractors and site teams. They know the questions to ask, the pitfalls to avoid, and the standards that need to be met. They’re the link between the designer’s vision, the client’s expectations, and the team’s delivery—keeping everything on track, on budget, and to specification.
What That Looks Like Day-to-Day
On any given day, you might be:
- Planning and scheduling works so every trade knows what’s happening and when.
- Troubleshooting site challenges before they become problems.
- Managing variations when a client changes their mind or a supplier can’t deliver on time.
- Coordinating orders and procurement, ensuring the right materials arrive exactly when they’re needed.
- Maintaining meticulous documentation to protect the company from risk.
- Ensuring health and safety compliance by liaising with our in-house H&S officer and making sure every contractor is fully briefed.
You’ll be part risk manager, part motivator, part problem-solver—and 100% focused on delivering exceptional results.
The Human Side of the Job
Project management isn’t just about checklists and schedules—it’s about relationships. You’ll be:
- Reassuring clients when they have wobbles.
- Interpreting both client wishes and designer details so the site team has clear direction.
- Working with suppliers to negotiate the best deals and timelines.
- Supporting and inspiring our own staff so they can work efficiently and with pride.
Beyond the Projects
This is also a leadership role that contributes directly to the growth of the business. You’ll work with our design and costings teams to explain our process to prospective clients, helping them feel confident enough to sign on with us. You’ll bring your own network of contacts, open new doors, and be part of shaping where the business goes next.
It’s an opportunity not just to deliver high-end landscapes but to play a central role in the company’s success—and to share in the benefits that success brings.
Why This Role is Different
High-end landscape project management is demanding, yes—but also deeply rewarding. You’ll be part of a talented team, have the freedom and support to put your skills to the test, and see the tangible results of your work in some of the most beautiful private gardens in the country.
