Holmer Green Road

Private Residence

Location: Hazelmere, High Wycombe
Client: Private Client
Status: Ongoing

This contemporary new build property is nestled within a heavily wooded, sloping site set back off Holmer Green Road.

The client required a functional and useable space that retained and enhanced its natural woodland assets that encouraged and promoted an indoor-outdoor lifestyle. The site was sloping with the house sitting considerably higher than the natural ground level.   A generous entertainment terrace immediately adjacent the house was required and a way to link the terrace seamlessly to the wider landscape whilst trying to negotiate a significant level change was to be explored. An existing shipping container was to be incorporated into the design with a view to renovate this structure into a home office / studio. The wider site was to accommodate intimate and secluded seating areas, a firepit and utility building with a way to navigate through the space without altering the existing slope or disturbing existing tree root zones.

The Design Approach: Form Follows Function

The Bauhaus, the most influential art and design school in history follows the rule ‘Less is more’ by applying only primary colors and simplifying the form of shapes. It also suggests that the form should follow the function, especially in design and architecture creating functional and minimalistic spaces.

The challenging site in a beautiful location creates an opportunity to explore the interplay between nature and the man made. Between the clean lines of the contemporary and the more flowing and loose structures found within the landscape.

Using these intersections, we have created a blended contrast between dense planting and open and contemporary clearings. This garden creates a sense of exploration, of clarity and order amid confusion and excitement.

Service offered: Landscaping

“I wouldn’t really classify myself as an emotional person, but when Eike showed us the initial designs for the garden I suddenly felt a large lump in my throat. To say we were blown away would be an understatement. I’m a graphic designer by trade, so I think I’m qualified to say that the way they translated a rather woolly brief into a finished design was really quite special. Ten out of ten from me”.
